Celebrated artist Pierre Joseph Redouté was not only known for his flower paintings. His representations of exotic fruits were definitely show stealers in the early 19th C. Bananas imported from Africa were considered highly exotic. Pineapples originated from South America and were imported to England around 1700. Grown locally in varieties such as ‘Black Jamaica’ and ‘Queen’, they were admired by crowds of royalty and nobility in the Royal Botanical Gardens. Hand painted in minute detail, some painted with single-hair brushes, this botanical painting will become a valuable heirloom over time.
