Sandro Botticelli is recognized as a master of the Italian Renaissance. Living in Florence around 1500, he was closely associated with the Medici family for whom he executed numerous works. Admired in his own time for his craftsmanship, he specialized in classical and religious subjects that were customary for contemporary artists. Because of his graceful, elegant figures and beautiful ornamental detail, Botticelli was selected to paint Biblical scenes on the walls of the Sistine Chapel.
